Rock Fort (Fort Rock) Lewis & Clark Campsite

Located on 1st Street on the Port of The Dalles. The site is northeast of Webber and 2nd Street. For more specific directions, call (541)296-2231.

Here Lewis & Clark and the Corps of Discovery camped on both legs of their journey; October 1805, and again in April 1806. While in The Dalles, Lewis & Clark encountered the largest gathering of indigenous peoples anywhere along their route and also saw the first homes made of wood since they left St Louis. Memorial plaque and interpretive signage located on site.

Dr Ken Karsmizki, Curator of History, has spent many years of study and research on the Lewis & Clark Expedition. Featured in a recent documentary on Lewis & Clark on the Discovery Center, Dr Karsmizki frequently speaks on the subject at the Museum. Please refer to their website for a schedule of dates and times.

Visit the oldest history museum in Oregon, featuring the Surgeon's Quarters from Old Fort Dalles; one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in the US. While you're there, explore the old Anderson Homestead.

Historic Downtown The Dalles presents a series of murals depicting the history of The Dalles and Wasco County, including the Corps of Discovery and Lewis & Clark.

Memaloose State Park
Located west of The Dalles 11 miles on Interstate 84

Named for the river island used by early Indians as a burial ground and described by Lewis & Clark. who called it "Sepulchar Island." Interpretive wayside.

Horsethief Lake State Park
Located east of The Dalles 2 miles on Hwy 14

Here the Corps camped after running the "narrows" and visited an Indian village where Clark counted 20 wooden houses. Interpretive signs and tours of many Indian petroglyphs (by appointment, (509)767-1159) including the famous "She Who Watches."

Near the backbar is a beautifully painted photograph of a young woman named Carrie Reichwein, done by Wilbur Hayes in 1899. This intriguing piece won first place in the Lewis and Clark Exposition in 1905 and 1906. Carrie Reichwein was only 19 years old when she posed for Hayes. She lived in the Portland-Vancouver area, but often traveled to The Dalles to see her sister, who was married to the community's postmaster. Carrie was know to frequent saloons, and it is believed that she feels very much at home on the walls of the Baldwin Saloon
