No visit to The Dalles would be complete without experiencing the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center & Wasco County Historical Museum. The 50,000 square foot facility is filled with exhibits, art, native American and immigrant crafts, plus exhibit narration. The center is open 9am to 5pm seven days a week ~ truly a must-see for locals and visitors alike.
The Dalles has even more to offer beginning with a visit to The Dalles Dam, or stroll through the historic downtown area and viewing the many historic murals painted throughout town - through a voice box you can listen to stories of the past. Historic self-guided walking tours are show the historic buildings and homes in our community.
Guided daily tours in the summer months (and by appointment) are free and feature more than 100 significant sites in two tours. See the Original Wasco County Courthouse, the Oregon Trail Marker, the stunning 1897 old St. Peters Landmark, formerly a Catholic church, and the historic Baldwin Saloon. Explore the old Ft. Dalles grounds and the Ft. Dalles Museum, housed in the original surgeon's quarters from the days when the Fort was active.
Another early landmark, Pulpit Rock, still stands in the middle of 12th Street, just as it did in the 1800's when the Methodist ministers preached to the native populations and settlers.
Learn more about Native Americans by viewing Indian baskets, carvings and crafts on display in a massive collection at Maryhill Museum of Art, located across the Columbia River in Washington, about 20 miles east on Highway 14. See Stonehenge while you are there, the nation's first memorial to World War I soldiers, located near Maryhill Museum in Klickitat County. See the work of local artists at The Dalles Art Center located in the historic Carnegie Library. There is something for everyone in The Dalles!
